RESULTS OF ANNUAL ELECTION OF COUNCIL FOR 2020

The following members have been elected to the Council of the Law Society of Singapore (‘Council’) with effect from 1 January 2020:

A. SENIOR CATEGORY (not less than fifteen years' standing)

The results of the Election held on Thursday, 24 October 2019 for the election of members of the Council in the Senior Category pursuant to section 51 of the Legal Profession Act are as follows:

The results of the Election held on Thursday, 24 October 2019 for the election of members of the Council in the Middle Category pursuant to section 51 of the Legal Profession Act are as follows:

Accordingly, Foo Guo Zheng, Benjamin and Yeoh Jun Wei, Derric (Yao Junwei) have been elected as members of the Council under section 51 of the Legal Profession Act.

D. IF YOU FAILED TO VOTE AS A MEMBER AT THE ANNUAL ELECTION OF COUNCIL 2020

If a member is required to vote but fails to do so, he or she shall not be entitled to apply for a practising certificate unless he or she satisfies either of the two conditions under section 50(2) of the Legal Profession Act:

“50(2) Every advocate and solicitor who is required to vote for the election of the members of the Council in accordance with subsection (1) and who fails to do so shall not be entitled to apply for a practising certificate unless he –

  1. satisfies the Registrar that he was not in Singapore at the time of the election or had a good and sufficient reason for not voting at the last election to the Council; or
  2. pays a penalty of $500 which shall be credited to the Compensation Fund established under section 75.”

As in previous years, a member who fails to vote may write to the Registrar, Supreme Court (and not the Law Society of Singapore) AFTER the date of the Election, to request a waiver of the voting requirement.

E. IMPLICATION OF I-VOTING ON MEMBERS OVERSEAS

Notwithstanding that i-Voting is possible anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access, pursuant to section 50(2)(a) of the Legal Profession Act, members who are overseas on election day and who fail to vote, or have a good and sufficient reason for not voting, may write to the Registrar, Supreme Court to request a waiver of the voting requirement. This request is to be made via eLitigation (no court fees required) after 24 October 2019, using the eform ‘Request for Waiver under Section 50(2) LPA’. The Court will reply to you via eLitigation.
