Pioneering Legal Tech: Reflections from Former Partner of Hill Dickson LLP
Mr Gerald Yee, Former Partner of Hill Dickson LLP, shared his legal tech journey as one of the pioneers in the field.
Tech Adoption Journey of OTP Law Corporation and Vantage Chambers
During the Legal Tech Fair on 21 February 2025, Lim Seng Siew, Director of OTP Law Corporation, and Jonathan Choo, Managing Director of Vantage Chamber, shared insights into their tech adoption journey, moderated by Rachel Wong. Here are the key highlights from their discussion:
The Need for Technology
Question: What sparked your firm’s shift toward adopting technology?
Seng Siew: In the late 1990s, an accountant friend advised us to hire full-time accounts staff to manage finances and administration. This would allow us to focus on clients and revenue. He also recommended using software to manage accounts and cases. This advice marked the beginning of our tech journey, aimed at making our work easier and more efficient.
Question: Was there a specific moment or need that led you to think, “Okay, it’s time to embrace tech?”
Jonathan:
Challenges in Implementing Technology
Question: What challenges did you face in implementing legal tech? How did you get everyone on board with the idea of digital transformation?
Seng Siew:
The Impact and Future of Legal Tech
Question: How has digital transformation impacted team collaboration and service delivery? Has it helped you provide better service to clients?
Seng Siew: Our tech journey has been a series of incremental steps. We kept what worked and discarded what didn’t. This approach proved beneficial, especially when we transitioned to a new legal practice management system some years ago. This change allowed us to pivot quickly when Covid-19 hit. We used to tell clients: “Cheap, fast, or good—choose two.” Now, thanks to technology, we can offer all three. For me, tech has become even more essential as I age and work differently. Collaboration tools are now crucial, particularly since we continue to operate in a hybrid work-from-home environment. It’s not just about serving clients better—it’s about being able to serve them at all. Without this transformation, we wouldn’t be able to meet their needs.
