The corporate sector plays a vital role in ESG integration into operations, embedding ESG principles into business strategies to drive sustainability and ethical responsibility. Private companies are increasingly aligning their operations with ESG frameworks to enhance long-term value, meet regulatory expectations, and address stakeholder concerns.

Companies Act Amendments on Directors' ESG Duties

The amendments to the Companies Act 1967 have reinforced directors’ duties with harsher penalties for breaches. Coupled with broader regulatory developments in ESG reporting, directors are arguably now being expected to consider and address ESG-related risks and opportunities as part of their duty to act in the best interests of the company. This includes ensuring compliance with ESG reporting requirements and addressing stakeholder expectations related to sustainability.

Enterprise Singapore Sustainability Enterprise Development Grant

The Enterprise Singapore Sustainability Enterprise Development Grant helps local companies grow and transform by supporting projects in three areas: Core Capabilities, Innovation and Productivity, and Market Access. Eligibility for the grant will be assessed based on the following:

  • Business entity registered and operating in Singapore;
  • Company has at least 30% local equity held directly or indirectly by Singaporean(s) and/or Singapore PR(s), determined by the ultimate individual ownership; and
  • Company is financially ready to start and complete the project. Commonly used financial indicators, such as the current ratio, will be used for assessment.

Sustainable Supply Chain Certification Scheme

The Certified Sustainable Supply Chain Professional (CSSCP) programme is a comprehensive education programme that integrates sustainability into supply chain principles. Run by International Supply Chain Education Alliance (ISCEA) and Supply Chain And Logistics Academy (SCALA), the programme aims to educate companies on how to add sustainable practices to their existing supply chain or provide insight on how to rebuild current supply chain with sustainability in mind.

Singapore Green Labelling Scheme

Administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) since 1999, the Singapore Green Labelling Scheme (SGLS) is Singapore’s leading environmental standard and certification mark with over 3800 unique products certified across 43 countries. The scheme aims to help the public identify environmentally preferred products that meet certain eco-standards.

The Enhanced Singapore Green Labelling Scheme for Pulp and Paper Products (Enhanced SGLS) was launched in January 2017 in response to the absence of peatland management and fire management in this category. This enhanced scheme requires companies to improve their peatland management and commit to the early detection and suppression of fires when they do occur.
