Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS)
The Law Society of Singapore provides free legal aid in criminal matters through the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.

It was launched on 2 September 1985 by the Law Society of Singapore to provide legal aid for applicants (accused persons) charged with theft cases.

Since then, CLAS has extended its scheme to include all offences under the Penal Code (except those who carry the death penalty where the State will automatically assign Counsel), and 12 other statutes.

However, because of certain constraints, the Scheme only covers cases in which the applicant claims trial.
