Scam E-mail Targeting Lawyers
The Law Society has been alerted about an e-mail scam targeting lawyers in
Singapore. The e-mail is purportedly sent by one ‘Kazuo Miyoko’ seeking to
retain the services of a lawyer in relation to the recovery of a sum of money
under a Collaborative Law Agreement involving a divorce settlement.
Lawyers from other jurisdictions who have received similar e-mail scams have
reportedly mentioned in online sources that the scam typically involves receipt
of a cheque in settlement from the purported husband of ‘Kazuo Miyoko’ which
will in the usual course be deposited in the lawyer’s client account. After
deducting legal fees, the lawyer sends the scammer the amount owing. The cheque
will subsequently be found to bounce or is a fraudulent cheque. The scammers may
even forward a copy of a stolen or forged passport with an apparently genuine
picture of Kazuo Miyoko.
Members who receive such an e-mail are advised to exercise due diligence.
Members Celebrate Dragon Year with a Festive Luncheon

Law Society at the Subordinate Courts’ Bar Room on Friday, 3 February 2012 to

What Every Lawyer Needs to Know About Applying for a Practising
Certificate Briefing Sessions 2012
15 and 22 Feb 2012, 10am-11.30am, Law Society Conference Room
From 1 March 2012, lawyers may apply for practising certificates for the
practice year 2012/2013 commencing 1 April 2012.
The Law Society will be holding briefing sessions for members and support staff
to explain the requirements and process in applying for a practising
certificate. Members and support staff can choose to attend either briefing
session on 15 February 2012 or 22 February 2012. Registration and refreshments
start from 9.30am.
Registration is free. To register for the briefing session, please complete the
registration form. The closing date for registration is 09 February 2012,
5pm.
Informal Ethics Guidance for Young Lawyers
Since 2010, the Law Society has established a facility under the PracMentor
scheme to help young lawyers who have a query on an ethical issue. Young lawyers
can contact the Law Society’s Communications Department at telephone number 6530
0232 or 6530 0236, which will arrange for the appropriate Law Society
Secretariat staff to provide assistance. Please note the following conditions of
use for this service:

The Law Society Secretariat accepts no liability whatsoever arising
from assistance given to callers or to any persons claiming through or
under them.
- Callers are obligated to independently verify statements of law,
procedure or fact made to them by the Law Society Secretariat, before
relying on them.
- The service must not be used as a substitute for the callers' own
thorough research and analysis or for the callers' own professional
judgment.

the Law Society Secretariat is merely to help identify ethical
issues and does not reflect the opinion of the Ethics Committee in
the matter.

Council’s Practice Direction 1 of 2012 - Statutory Declaration For
Holding Of Unclaimed Conveyancing Money
Law practices continuing to hold unclaimed conveyancing money in the client
account after 31 December 2011 are to comply with Practice Direction 1 of 2012.
A law practice must have at least 2 signatories to the client account and the
signatories must be qualified in accordance with the Legal Profession
(Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules to act as signatory. If there is any change to the
signatories, Council of the Law Society must be informed by way of a statutory
declaration.

Conditions of Sale 2012
The Law Society of Singapore has launched its Conditions of Sale 2012 (the ‘2012
Conditions’) on 19 January 2012. The 2012 Conditions update the Law Society of
Singapore’s Conditions of Sale 1999 (the '1999 Conditions'). The Law Society’s
Conditions of Sale are a set of standard terms and conditions which the buyer
and seller may wish to incorporate by reference into contracts for sale and
purchase of immovable properties. Parties may however contract out of the 2012
Conditions or any particular Condition by providing their own terms and
conditions in the contracts, where appropriate, to meet the particular
circumstances of their transaction.
